It’s been 9 months, and this new website baby is finally breathing on it’s own. I’m selling calendars, prints and cards on my site at either http://www.elusivetrout.com/ OR http://www.hybrid-arts.com/. Look for Elusive Trout in Spokane at Aunties Books, the MAC gift shop, and the Tin Man Gallery on Garland Street. A great selection of calendars and cards can also be found in Eastern Oregon at Bella in Baker City. I will be selling through the holidays for 2010 and carry over this design to 2011. Then a whole new crop of trout will appear for 2012. I’m thinking of adding T-Shirts and other goodies in the near future. Stay tuned!

Couer d’Alene, Idaho. Spent the morning visiting the high end galleries at the resort in the middle of town. While they liked the trout, most didn’t want to carry anything other than original art from noted painters. But I did get some valid referrals to local gift shops and Orvis’ address. Will follow up with owner of Simply Northwest (referral from the NAWBO meeting) and maybe come up with some merchandising ideas with/for them.

Licensing show in NY
Thank you Jim Roszel for your great information on the Surtex show in NY. Unfortunately, it’s THIS weekend which leaves us plenty of time to get ready for next year! According to the write up this show is attended by 94% of all reps, licensees and new artists each year and represent textiles, gifts, home decor, and lots more industries. Those are pretty good stats. It’s first come first served and past exhibitors get first preference on available booths, which are furnished by the show. So sign up early!

Insight from Hoperoot Consulting
Hope Neighbor is a partner at Hoperoot Consulting, a business strategy consulting start-up in San Francisco and family relative. Her website is currently under construction at http://www.hoperoot.com, but check back soon for full details on their new venture. Hope suggests that I really define my target audience segments and get to know them very well before launching big plans. The outdoor segment (fishing, hunting, camping, etc) and the gift-buyer segment (moms, dads, gift store retailers, galleries) as two examples. Find out who is buying and where they like to shop. To that effect, I’m taking 4-6 weeks to show the art to the Spokane community via networking dinners, researching outdoor and gift retailers and galleries who would be interested in carrying my product locally and sharing the art with all my friends at, say– the PTA, in my kids’ schools. Hope advises that this practice will give me a clear focus on who I’m selling to and how to accommodate their needs and appear in the channels they shop. Great advice! Thanks Hope! My first venture is this Thursday at the local NAWBO dinner. This is a networking group for Inland NW women-owned businesses, many of whom are gift shop owners and gallery owners, and all of whom have experience running a business! I’m very excited to take along cards with all the art represented and get some feedback!…Dee

I have created these twelve trout illustrations that were originally intended for family and friends, but I am now getting requests for prints, cards and a calendar that they want to purchase as gifts for others. I am selling 9×12″ prints in two galleries in the northwest in a depressed market! I have seen first hand that this concept appeals to men and women, artists and outdoorsman, both as a gift for someone else or a purchase for themselves. I opened in Crossroads Art Center in Baker City, OR in May. This is ranch country and the ranchers came in and bought fish prints while their wives browsed the landscapes on display. It seems there is an idea here, a very marketable idea with licensing potential. I will be posting my progress to secure licensing for Hybrid Arts – Trout Hatchery creations as I gather information and learn more about the process. First up…the legal prospective: I own the copyright on all illustrations shown in this blog. They may not be reproduced in any form without my consent.
